Is there a certain item you plan on purchasing as soon as you "make it big"?
Maybe a certain pair of red-soled shoes?
Or a delicious designer handbag?
Or maybe there is something special you plan on doing once you become really successful.
Like a trip to Paris...
Or a trip around the world!
Well for the longest time (literally YEARS) I have been dying for a pair of Chanel flats.
One of the first times that I set foot in a Chanel store I spotted a wall full of them and nearly fainted.
There were so beautiful and the perfect investment piece, I told myself.
Then I glanced at the price.
OUCH.
It was then that I vowed that someday, when I became very successful I would buy myself a pair.
I worked for a lot of years and enjoyed much success before I could rationalize such an extravagant purchase on my credit card.
At the beginning of the year, I set some very ambitious business/financial goals for myself that would require a lot of hard work and doing some things that I was TERRIFIED to do.
Well last Friday I hit my goal.
And first thing Saturday morning, I literally skipped down to 5th Avenue and purchased my long-awaited pair of Chanel flats!

Now this may sound silly, but for the last few weeks every time I was exhausted, or frustrated or scared I would think about those flats and it would motivate me.
Sure wanting to "become successful" is a great goal, but it's also pretty broad.
The best way to set effective goals is to make them really specific.
You may be surprised to learn that I have encounter a lot of frustration and disappointment while running my businesses, just as many of you do, and I find that setting specific, attainable goals along the path to success keeps me going.
I like to encourage you to do the same.
And my goodness reward yourself! You've got no boss to congratulate you on your success, so do it yourself! Too many of us are so focused on that next goal, that we never take the time to properly celebrate and reward ourselves along the way.
Recognition and Rewards are critical elements to keeping ourselves motivated during the challenging times (and trust me, there will be plenty)!
Every time I look down at my new flats I am reminded of what I have accomplished, and more encouraged than ever to continue.
What is something that you would love to splurge on as soon as you hit a major milestone on your path to success?

Red bottom heels, and a Berkin
Yes! Me too please!x
I see myself in an ice blue 1955 Ford Thunderbird – hard top convertible. I’m wearing a white sleeveless turtleneck top (who owns those tops? they are only practical for a handful of days a year), I can picture myself in it and I’m not old, so success is just around the curb!
Nice Eleni! I love it!
Goals are critical to achieving what you want in life and business. It starts with having a clear vision. Creating a plan. Taking action. Tracking your results. Congratulations on your accomplishment! Keep up the great work!
Thanks Brenda!x
I’m looking forward to taking my family on a long vacation as my goal ONE year from now. This gives me a time line and the idea of sipping a cool drink on the beach keeps me motivated.
Congratulations on the new shoes. They’re beautiful.
Wonderful Renee!
Melanie – I can totally relate to this story! I did the same thing last year by overcoming my fear of public speaking and kept raising the bar each month. As soon as I hit my desired level, I went shopping… I didn’t know what I wanted my reward to be, and then for the first time in my life, a pair of black Coach boots caught my eye, and I said “Why not?” It felt strange at first, but they now serve as a great reminder for closing that extremely scary chapter of my life! It isn’t silly because you earned it and you are smart to celebrate your achievements!
I hope your blog inspires more entrepreneurs to set a BIG “get out of your comfort zone” goal and a reward to celebrate fighting through the fear to accomplishment, then start all over again, so we can all keep getting better!
Best,
Kathy Bass
How wonderful! Thanks for sharing Kathy!
Nothing quite so awesome as your shoes!
I’d love to buy a humungous computer monitor and a couple pairs of designer jeans!
Have home redecorated top to bottom.
Ooo that sounds like fun!
I would love be able to live in New York for half a year once I have a business built up that I could work remotely with. Living in Wellington NZ, New York would be the most wonderful place to experience for a while. That’s my dream!
Hi Melanie,
Thanks for sharing!!! As always it’s inspiring and motivating to know that any goal is achievable and you are living proof of that for women.
My reward to myself would be the new large “Chanel” canvas tote and a black pair of Louboutin. Something classy about a woman crossing her legs and seeing the red bottom. Just love it!!!
Gorgeous!!!
Thanks Melanie! I need to think about this, but I bet you it’s a trip to Greece where I don’t have to worry about every little cost. But now what I would love, is to pay off the debt I created starting my business and paying THAT off would feel just as amazing I think
Oh my goodness…it’s like listening to my inner voice….I have always coveted a pair of Chanel ballet flats ( I only wear ballet flats) ….love your posts they are an inspiration! Thank you
